Illuminating Abu Dhabi’s Natural Beauty through Light Art
As dusk falls over Abu Dhabi, the city begins to glimmer as an open-air art gallery for the groundbreaking light art exhibition, Manar Abu Dhabi. Transforming familiar sites and off-the-beaten path landscapes into tourist attractions glowing with over 35 illuminated installations, the event runs along the Corniche, mangroves, and surrounding islands until January 31st. Curated under Abu Dhabi’s new Public Art program, Manar (meaning “lighthouse” in Arabic) interweaves culture and environment to foster appreciation for the emirate’s biodiversity.
Internationally acclaimed artists like Mohammed Kazem and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer install evocative pieces playing with light, space, and perception. Standouts include Kazem’s Sea/Sky blurring the boundary between water and air, Samia Halaby’s vibrant vertical garden, and Lozano-Hemmer’s pulsing robotic searchlights prompting reflection on themes of migration. Many transform after dark, like Groupe F’s geometric canopy projections at the Eastern Mangroves and Alaa Edris’ illuminated origami boats drifting along the Corniche. For aerial views, witness the magical drone show above Saadiyat Island nightly.
